Hegel says the Phenomenology is the "pathway of the natural consciousness" and also the "ladder to the scientific standpoint." Once we have reached absolute knowing, we do not need to climb again—we have the standpoint of the Logic. But the Phenomenology remains the first part of the system of science in the 1807 plan: it is spirit's self-knowledge in the form of appearing.
